Cosy Up For Fall

Cosy Up For Fall

Every fall I get the itch to warm up my surroundings. I can't help myself, as soon as the leaves start to turn colour I feel the need to transform the interior of my house from an easy breezy beach house to cozy little cocoon. You'd think this would be a difficult task as I have practically no storage in this tiny little house and I try to do it on little to no budget.  But, I've discovered that it really only takes a few simple changes to get a completely different look.

Here are a few tricks I've learned over the years.  I replace my throw pillows every season. In the fall and winter, I like to have pillows with soft textured fabrics with warmer more subdued tones and patterns. Where do I store them you may be wondering? Well I don't store them at all. I simply layer each pillow cover over the next and when the season changes that's the one I put on top...genius wouldn't you say! Next I swap out my trays for more neutral ones like the black lacquer one shown in the photo at the top of the page. Then I change my throws from lighter knitted ones to soft and cozy fur throws, which I store in my coffee table when I'm not using them. These few simple steps instantly warm up the space. Look at the difference just changing the pillows and the tray can make! I didn't change anything else in this room and it looks completely different from the room in the picture above don't you think?

I don't just do this in my living room, I do this throughout the house! Here's another example, in my diningroom all I've done is changed the covers on the pillows, swapped the tray in the centre of the table with one I had another room and added a fur throw to each bench. I also changed a few of the accessories with ones I had in different rooms of the house. Voila a brand new look for practically no cost!

I often find pillow covers at Ikea, Jysk and Amazon for around $10. The pillows in my, "fall look" are from Walmart and cost $16. They were actual pillows so I removed the filling and put a zipper closure at the bottom. By doing this, I can use them as pillow covers which allows me to use my existing feather pillow inserts. Feather inserts always give a more expensive look.  If you aren't into sewing, your dry-cleaner or seamstress can do this for you for next to nothing. Are you feeling inspired to do a cozy up for fall?
